After that, he received a masters of physics from Dartmouth College. Dr. Sohma is the founder and CEO of Macro Focus, a trading firm based in Halifax. He is the former director of business development for the Independent Market Research Bureau and member of The Canadian Venture Capital Association (CVC), the Canadian Alternative Investment Network (CAIN) and the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). Dr. Sohma is also the former manager of Commercial Options Analysis (COA), a market research firm, and the former director of digital asset management for Liquidnet in New York, United States. He currently writes for Reuters. Dr. Sohma has appeared on CNBC, Bloomberg Television, and has spoken in different cities across North America, in regards to financial markets and technical analysis.



Ty in the Middle is his weekly podcast, which features Sohrab Gherai on Mondays, Roy Nickerson on Wednesdays, and Greg Dechaine on Fridays. In September 2015, he released the first edition of the book Typs, a scientific book about technical analysis and its approach to trading. Ty the Middle has appeared in an issue of Canadian Business, in a February 2011 article "Artificial Intelligence: Trusted but Paranoid," and in another in 2012 about “Blockchain: The Story of the New Financial Order.” Dr. Sohma has been called "the best technical analyst in North America" by CNBC. Born in East Point, Georgia, Sohma grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and studied information technology at North Carolina State University. He has a graduate degree in engineering.


At age 12, Sohma knew he wanted to trade stocks but for the next seven years he studied a career as a nuclear engineer. By the age of 17, he knew that what he really wanted to do was trade stocks. Sohma and his brother, Mohit Sohma, studied at the University of New Brunswick where Ty became a member of the school's society of mathematics and science, also known as Varsity.


In 2002, Ty became a member of the University of New Brunswick’s Finance Club, and, with his interest in technical analysis, he joined the InVEST Exchange, a peer-to-peer trading platform which enables clients to buy and sell stocks without brokers. In 2006, he became the founding member of the Northern Capital Markets Team in Halifax, which was designed to take advantage of arbitrage opportunities.


In 2007, Dr. Sohma was awarded the Financial Literacy award by the Atlantic Canadian Credit Union Association. Dr. Sohma has been a member of the market surveillance committee of the Canadian Securities Administrators and was a board member of the Halifax Stock Exchange. Sohma also served on the advisory committee for the Halifax Stock Exchange. Sohma was also president of the Northern Capital Markets Team, which launched in 2007.


The team has since expanded to 14 members, with six of them being chartered chartered financial analysts (CFA) and five were chartered fellows of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. The team was organized by Sohma, who worked in online marketing and was also a corporate securities trader. The team has a website called Nova Scotia's Next Great Trading Team, and sponsors an amateur basketball team called the Nova Scotia National Amateurs.


Nova Scotia has a National Championship for the National Amateur Basketball League. Sohma also served as a director of the team. The team won its first Championship in 2011, beating Quebec's Radical Edge of San-Francisco 81–76, and has won eight National Championships.


Sohma left his role with Nova Scotia's Next Great Trading Team to launch Macro Focus, a trading firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sohma serves as the director of trading of Macro Focus. Sohma was the co-founder of the POM Centre, a market research firm based in Dartmouth.
